MAJ Jonathan (JD) Wynne is an aviation officer from Newport News, Virginia. JD commissioned in 2016 through the Vanderbilt University ROTC program while completing his master’s degree in human and organizational development.
After commissioning, JD reported to Fort Rucker where he completed Helicopter Overwater Survival Training (HOST – Dunker), Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) school, and flight school before selecting the AH-64E Apache airframe. JD then reported to 4-4 Attack Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th ID where he served as a platoon leader. JD deployed to Iraq and Syria in 2018-2019 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, supporting the Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF), and again to Iraq and Syria in 2019-2020 in support of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). After completion of the Captains Career Course, JD continued to 2-6 Air Cavalry Squadron at Wheeler Army Airfield as a member of 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. There he served as the Charlie Troop and Delta Troop Commander, completing three Joint Pacific Multi-National Readiness Center exercises and two Pacific Pathways rotations.
JD has accumulated over 600 hours of combat flight time, receiving three air medals with C device, two meritorious service medals and the combat action badge.
After command, JD completed a master’s degree in kinesiology at Texas A&M University. He now lives in West Point, NY serving as a combatives instructor in the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy.
